Overview
Mongolia’s Naadam festival is a national celebration for Mongolians to get together with their families and friends and enjoy the cultural events hosted by each city or town. The cultural events draw large crowds of native Mongolians, expats and foreign travelers making it an ideal location for Amnesty International and the rest of the Mongolian Volunteer organizations to conduct outreach and garner support from the public.
The Amnesty International (AI) chapter in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia capitalized on the Naadam celebration by setting up an information tent outside the stadium to share information with event attendees. In conjunction with the Mongolian Volunteers Network, the eight AI volunteers distributed materials such as The Wire newsletter, the 2008 Annual Report and the Human Dignity information packet. In an effort to attract more attention and engage individuals in AI’s cause, the volunteers did a ‘Taste Your Rights’ exercise that involved asking individuals their knowledge of human rights. Questions answered correctly were rewarded with candy, which created a fun and interesting environment for people to learn about human rights in general.
Feedback
Over the two days, the AI volunteers found the initiative to be very successful in sharing information with interested individuals, engaging the public with questions about human rights and raising overall awareness of the volunteer efforts available in Mongolia. Since the Naadam festival draws thousands of visitors to the stadium, AI was able to reach a large group of individuals, all of whom seemed interested in gathering the materials being handed out at the tent.
However, the tent was located within the volunteer area which greatly catered to children. Had the tent been closer to the stadium entrance, it would have had greater exposure, particularly to the 20-35 age group, an important demographic for activist causes. The team may have also benefited from volunteers circling other areas to share information with attendees that didn’t visit the volunteer section. Naturally, the more volunteers available to speak with individuals one on one the better, so increasing volunteer participation for next year should be considered. Nevertheless, Naadam proved to be a great time to reach the Mongolian public about AI’s domestic and international work.
As an American, Amnesty International is a house-hold name that most educated individuals are aware of in some capacity. In my first week in Mongolia, I have come to realize that Amnesty International’s work is not well known among its citizens. With only one office in the entire country, the Amnesty International chapter in Ulaanbaatar holds a great deal of responsibility to educate Mongolians both in and out of the city about its work and beliefs both on a national and international scale.
As a developing country that has only recently come into a democratic government, it is important for all Mongolians to be aware of the support and resources Amnesty International provides for individuals facing human rights abuses, as well as the link they provide to world issues. Providing more opportunities for individuals at all age levels to get involved and creating more public events will be key to Amnesty International’s success in Mongolia.
